Three Popular Canon Powershot 14.1-Megapixel Digital Camera Models

Canon offers several different 14.1-megapixel cameras in its Powershot series.  Let’s take a look at three of them in more detail

1) The Canon Powershot SX30 IS 14.1MP

Canon Powershot SX30 IS 14MP

Canon Powershot SX30 IS 14MP

This is a high-end, advanced digital camera capable of high-quality photos.  One of the primary features of the SX30 IS is the lens 35x optical zoom (24-840 mm) enabling shots from telephoto to wide angle.  The aperture is f/2.7 (W) through f/5.8 (T) with a shutter speed of 1-1/3200 sec (shutter speeds vary depending on the shooting mode).  ISO sensitivity range is 80-1600 equivalent which is automatically set by the camera.

In addition to taking still photos, the SX30 IS has an HD video mode (1280x720pixels) for recording home videos.  An HDMI connector allows direct connection from the camera to an HD TV.

Another key feature of the SX30 IS is its optical image stabilization (IS)which corrects for camera movement to improve performance.  The IS has a dynamic mode that works during video capture as well.

One item to note: the SX30 IS does not have wireless control capability.

2) The Canon Powershot SX150 IS 14.1MP

Canon Powershot SX150 IS

Canon Powershot SX150 IS

This is another high-end, advanced compact 14MP that comes in red or black and has a 12x optical zoom as well as optical image stabilization to help you take great photos in a variety of imaging conditions.  Its small size makes this camera very portable for when you’re on the go.  Plus, this model has 720p HD video mode for grabbing those “can’t miss” video opportunities.  The camera uses AA batteries; make sure to get rechargeable batteries and bring extras so you never run out of juice.

3) The Canon Powershot SD1400 IS 14MP

Canon Powershot SD1400 IS 14MP

Canon Powershot SD1400 IS 14MP

The SD1400 IS 14.1-megapixel is an ultracompact point-and-shoot with 4x optical zoom.  This camera weighs under 5 ounces and at 3.6 x 2.2 x 0.7 inches, it’s small enough to carry with you anywhere.  This camera also has 720p HD video mode for video on the go.   An interesting feature of this camera is it has a low light mode (uses ISO 400-6000) to optimize those photos by candlelight or campfire.  Comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack.

Some Features of the Nikon Coolpix S205

The Nikon Coolpix S205 digital camera is a qood quality compact point-and-shoot at a great low price.

Here is what some customers are saying about the Nikon Coolpix s205:

“This camera has a lot of features for the price. I am a longtime Canon fan, and I was pleasantly surprised at the ease of use and quality. I bought this camera for my wife and I so we don’t have to take a big camera with us on trips…it will give you 12mp quality photos–Which is amazing for a little camera.”

“My daughter got this camera last year at Christmas. Its a wonderful camera. Its takes super pictures. The video function is awesome too. I like the fact that the charger runs off a cord instead of batteries. So when it needs charged you just plug it in. Love it. Cant say enough about this camera.”

The Coolpix S205 features a 12 megapixel CCD image sensor so you can enlarge your photos to just about as big as you want.  It also comes with face detection andb link detection for helping to photograph family and friends.  The flash also features red-eye reduction and fill-in flash.  Image stabilization and an auto scene selector help to enhance image quality.  Iso sensitivity ranges from 80 to 3200 for photographing in multiple lighting conditions.

The built-in lens is made of glass (not plastic) and has reasonable f/3.2 – f/5.9 speed.  There is a full 4x optical zoom for when you can’t get close to your subject.

Measuring just 2.2 x 0.7 inches and weighing just about a quarter of a pound, this small camera fits in your pocket and is perfect for those short trips when you want to take quality shots but don’t want to carry a lot of gear with you.  But despite its compact size, the Coolpix S205 also has a large 2.7″ LCD display for framing your image before you shoot, and multiple playback modes including slide show, zoom playback, sort by date, and movie with sound can assist you in reviewing your images on-board or sharing with your friends right away.

Convenient on-camera software includes image editing such as retouch, resizing, cropping, and skin tone smoothing.  So you can optimize your photos without having to edit them later on a computer.

In addition, it has a super-convenient video mode for when you need to grab those quick clips.  The video format is AVI movie with TV quality.

Some reviewers have commented that the flash doesn’t carry very far in very low lighting conditions – in fact, most compact digital models have trouble in this regard.  So if you plan to take a lot of images in low light, or you really want quality low light pictures, you might consider investing in, say, an entry-level DSLR (see our post on Nikon D3100 deals, for example) which will give you superior performance.  But if you’re just needed a quick point-and-shoot model for taking general photos, this camera should meet your needs and hopefully your budget.

Nikon D90 deals

Whether you already own a mid-level digital SLR camera and are looking for newer technology, or you’re looking to upgrade, the Nikon d90 dslr is definitely a camera to consider on your list.  The D90 delivers outstanding, low-noise image quality enhanced by the an advanced image processing engine (Nikon’s EXPEED system).  The advanced image processing enables a quick burst rate of 4.5 frames per second for up to 100 shots, as well as LIve Mode and a face recognition function.  In addition to digital photos, the D90 comes with HD video mode to create amazing movie clips.

Here is what some customers are saying about the Nikon D90:

“If you have your basic photography skills down, you can make any DSLR sing, however, I believe THIS camera, because of its superb sensor and spot-on feature set, can actually help you improve your technique and get better results. You’ll take more chances and push yourself farther because now you have the tools (ie. features) to help capture more difficult, more creative shots. And you didn’t have to spend $3,000 to get there!”

“Overall, there is nothing I can say negative about the D90. It’s everything I was hoping it would be, and it’s so worth the money to upgrade. I’m selling the D60 for half what I paid – and doing it gladly – because the D90 is worth more than it’s being sold for. I absolutely highly recommend it.”

When looking for deals on the Nikon D90, here are some highlights of the D90 product features:

Image Sensor
The 12.3 MP image sensor has plenty of resolution, enough for most image enlargements (up to 20 x 30 inches or more).  The large DX sensor (Nikon equivalent of APS-C) measures 15.8 x 23.6mm and has a 1.5X picture angle.

Image processing
The Nikon D90 features advanced image processing (called EXPEED) to make the most out of the 12.3 megapixel data.  The image processing engine is very fast, enabling high speed continuous shooting.

Built-in image sensor cleaning
An ultrasonic sensor cleaning function uses four frequencies to remove image-degrading dust particles from the sensor’s optical low pass filter.

Autofocus
The D90 has an intelligent 11-point autofocus system that uses a scene recognition database for enhanced performance (see also Exposure Function below)

Exposure function
The D90 utilizes a 420-pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Metering II, along with a Scene Recognition System, to match your image to a stored image database for enhanced exposure optimization and accuracy.

Software
The D90 offers a 4-level Auto Active D-lighting function to enhance details in the shadows and highlighted areas in bright light conditions (it works by localizing tone control).  In-camera image editing allows you to post-process images without having to post-process on a PC later.

Burst rate
It has a fast burst rate of 4.5 frames per second for when you’re taking those action shots.

Ergonomics
This is a sturdy, solid model, with a good grip, and the direct access buttons give tactile feedback.

ISO
The ISO range is from 200 to 3200.  Settings can be set on auto-ISO or customized to your needs.

Video
This camers comes with a 24 fps HD D-movie video capability.  The large image sensor is delivers exceptional high ISO performance during low-light shooting.  Shoots movies in 3 different jpeg formats: 320 x 216 pixels, 640 x 424 pixels and 1,280 x 720 pixels.

Live View
Live View allows the user to frame their pictures using the color screen at the back of the camera (of course this wasn’t always the case for early digital slr’s).  Three autofocus modes let you focus on any point in the frame.  The 170-degree viewing angle helps to verify focus during Live View or after taking an image.

HDMI Compatible
You can enjoy both still images and movies shot with the D90 via HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) with the global-standard digital A/V signal transfer. HDMI Mini connector is employed.

Size and Weight
One thing to consider about this camera is the weight: at 22 ounces for the camera and 14.8 ounces for the kit lens, it’s not the lightest DSLR in the world.  But the upside is you will get top-notch images and best-in-class performance

A handy accessory
The remote control (ML-L3) is an optional, inexpensive accessory (purchased separately), but it can trigger multiple takes without going back to the camera which be very handy for things like group shots.

Nikon D3100 deals

If you’re looking for a great digital SLR camera, the Nikon D3100 DSLR competes favorably with the best in its class and is a great value for the money. This entry-level digital slr camera is perfect for the amateur photographer, and has outstanding image quality. In addition to digital photos, the Nikon D3100 comes with 1080p HD video for creating amazing cinematic videos.

Here is what some customers are saying about the Nikon D3100:

“For the cost of this camera, I don’t think you can get anything better. The low light performance is off the charts. As a wedding photographer I regularly shoot with Nikon’s high end professional equipment and I was amazed how close this camera is to a pro camera.”

“This is an amazing deal! Unless you make most of your income from photography or have a stockpile of old lenses (this camera can only autofocus with AFS lenses) then this camera is the must have camera of the year.”

When looking for Nikon D3100 best deals, it is helpful to review several of the key product features.

The 14 Megapixel DX sensor offers high quality images that can be enlarged to 20×30 inches or more. This is a larger DX image sensor (Nikon equivalent of APS-C) with a size of 23.1 x 15.4mm and an effective picture angle of 1.5X.

The lens is a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens which offers the legendary NIKKOR optical quality and fast, accurate autofocus for vivid color, striking contrast and crisp detail and VR image stabilization to ensure the sharpest hand-held pictures and movies.

There are many features on the Nikon D3100 which reduce the need for tweaking to optimize photo quality, including auto iso, auto white balance, auto distortion correction and auto chromatic aberrations, as well as program mode, exposure compensation, and flash sync mode.

The full 1080p HD video (1920 x 1080 pixels) has autofocus and sound, and delivers cinematic quality. The videos and videos can be stored to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards with up to 64GB of storage.

At just 1 pound, this camera is very lightweight and has a good grip; so it’s easy to carry by hand or around your neck. This makes it great for traveling or anytime you’re on the go.

One consideration is that some people have commented on is that, while this camera generally takes great photos in low light, it does jump to a high ISO value when using the built-in flash. However as many reviewers have pointed out, the high ISO images are still very good quality (for blowing up at least to 8×10 size) and that the settings can be adjusted in manual mode if further optimization is desired.

Product Features of the Nikon D3100:

14.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor
3-inch monitor with One-Touch Live View shooting and movie capture

Capture images to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards (not included)

Digital SLR Camera Deals

Many entry-level and mid-level digital single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras on the market today can be purchased at a fraction of the cost of full professional cameras, and yet still can take professional quality images and have many of the high-end, advanced functions found in much more expensive models. When looking for slr camera deals, some of the key features to look for include:

Resolution – The resolution of digital slr cameras is expressed in megapixels (MP) or as a figure such as 1024 x 768. Most of the digital cameras on the market today have above 8 MP which will probably be enough for most amateur applications. When choosing a digital slr camera, buy enough megapixels to meet your needs, but there’s no need to overdo it – especially since higher resolution costs more. Higher resolution also requires more data storage since each image will be a larger file size. Megapixel resolution is not the only factor the determines overall image quality. Other key factors include image sensor size, image stabilization, burst rate, lens quality, software, and ISO sensitivity.

Image sensor size – Image sensors typically come in 3 sizes: full frame, APS-C, and four thirds. A larger image sensor captures a larger area of the image, resulting in a photograph that looks like it was taken with a shorter focal length (also known as crop factor). Full frame cameras take the best images in very low lighting and have higher sensitivity settings, but they are more expensive.

Image stabilization (IS) -  helps image quality especially in low lighting. Image stabilization is achieved by either optical IS (moving a small element inside the lens) or sensor shift IS (moving the image sensor itself).

ISO – many digital slr cameras have a wide ISO range which can help optimize for variable lighting and for whether the subject you are photographing is moving or stationary. Higher ISO allows for faster shutter speed and/or a smaller aperture but can increase the noise or grain in the image.

Burst rate (or frame rate) – the shooting frame rate you need depends on how fast you need to take sequential photos. Typical entry-level DSLRs can take a minimum of 2-3 frames per second which should be enough for taking photos of the kids running in the back yard.

Lenses- One of the advantages of digital slr cameras is the ability to switch lenses and add a range of accessories such as remote controls. The f-number of the lens (the ratio of the lens focal length to its effective aperture diameter) affects the amount of light that passes through the lense as well as the depth of field of the image. A larger aperture (small f-number like f/2.0) will have a shallow depth of field, while a smaller aperture (larger f-number) will have a larger depth of field. In addition, the optical zoom of the lens is very important in order to take closeup photos of objects from a longer distance. Macro and wide angle lenses are available as well depending on whether you’re shooting closeups of small objects or panoramic views.

Live view – Early digital slr models did not let users frame their pictures using the color screen at the back of the camera. The live view function permits digital slr cameras to do just that.

Video – In recent years many digital slr cameras have added HD video as an additional feature. If you are looking for a video function in your digital slr camera, buy a model with 1080p HD video (1920 x 1080 pixels) or higher for cinematic video quality.

Software – some digital SLR’s come with in-camera image editing, without the need to edit later on a computer.

Size and weight – If you will be doing a lot of traveling with your camera on the road or on the go, it’s better to choose a lightweight model that still meets your performance needs. There are very good cameras available well under 2 pounds and some near 1 pound.

Memory storage – typically digital slr’s have the ability to download images to an external memory card, such as SD/SDHC/SDXC or compact flash formats which can store many tens of gigabytes.

Cases – get a case with a hard shell for your digital slr to help protect the LCD screen

Batteries – Digital slr cameras do have relatively high power requirements, and several battery options exist including rechargeable Li-ion batteries, NiMH and alkaline batteries. Rechargeable Li-ion batteries have higher energy density compared with NiMH batteries and alkaline batteries, but they do cost more.

Check out our new blog posts on the Nikon D3100 and the Nikon D90 that review features and show you where to get the best deals.

Paying attention to the above features while making a digital slr camera comparison can help you to buy the best camera to meet your needs.  For further information on camera models and the best prices, follow the red link at the top of this page for digital slr camera deals USA.
